Hayesdown First School

Striving for excellence together

Year Three

We have two Year Three classes:

Owls Class and Ospreys Class

Welcome to year three at Hayesdown Primary School.  In Owls class Ms Dowdle is the class teacher and the teaching assistant is Mrs Powis.  In Ospreys class Mrs Hain teaches every day, apart from Thursday when you will find Mrs Mac at the helm.  Their teaching assistant is Mrs Taylor.

Year three is a very exciting school year.  Not only is it the first year group in Key Stage Two, it is also a time when children are becoming more independent as learners, managers of their own time and creators of their own learning journey.

We are a very excited team – we want the best for our children and want them to be successful.  With that in mind, we do ask that parents support their children’s learning by ensuring that any homework is completed and that children are encouraged at home to value their education.  The greatest way you can support your child is to ensure that they are reading five times a week for at least 10 minutes.  Please don’t think that if your child can read fluently that they don’t need to continue to share reading with you.  It is important to hear them reading, discuss texts with them and to find information together – it doesn’t have to be their reading book; it could be a newspaper or publication.

We know that learning from experience has a huge impact and so we have planned in some exciting visits over the school year … we won’t give too much away now but dinosaurs, Victorian Headmistresses and ancient tombs are on the agenda.  We will also be focusing on special events throughout the year – being eco friendly, Remembrance Day, Anti-bullying, Christmas, New Year, Red Nose day to name but a few.  Amongst all of the quality learning that we aim to achieve are the core values of the school –

R = responsible     E = enthusiastic   A = ambitious   C = confident   H = happy and healthy

Every Friday we will celebrate a child’s achievement in one of these areas and we are also always on the look out for children who go above and beyond with their behaviour. Mrs Battersby’s SHINE and SPARKLE board is very important and we encourage all children to be their best at all times so that they are GOLDEN.

The projects we will be focusing on this year are –

Fossils, dinosaurs and secrets of the coast … Volcanoes and what happened in Pompeii … Victorian schools and experiences for children at that time … The Iron Age – architects and buildings … and the Olympics.
