Hayesdown school believes that English skills are vital to the development of children so they are prepared for their future life. A broad and balanced English programme using objectives from the National Curriculum 2014, determines the skills that each year group and Key Stage must cover. A range of genres are studied and promoted and a variety of resources are used to promote a reading and writing culture. Teachers model the skill of writing and the children are given a range of writing opportunities including the use of paired, group and independent writing tasks. A culture of learning from each other is promoted through use of co-operative learning structures. This is developed across both key stages, so that the children learn to respond appropriately and supportively to each other regardless of gender, age, cultural or ethnic background.
The aims of teaching writing in our school are to develop pupils who:
Special Educational Needs Disability (SEND) / Pupil Premium / Higher Attainers
All children will have Quality First Teaching. Any children with identified SEND or in receipt of pupil premium funding may have work additional to and different from their peers in order to access the curriculum dependent upon their needs. As well as this, our school offers a demanding and varied curriculum, providing children with a range of opportunities in order for them to reach their full potential and consistently achieve highly from their starting points.
Our English writing curriculum links with our school’s REACH values in the following ways:
RESPONSIBLE : Children are given opportunities to communicate their ideas and choice of vocabulary through their writing. They are encouraged to be critical editors of both their own and other’s writing and to understand the impact that their writing can have on others.
ENTHUSIASTIC: Children are inspired by the exciting and quality texts that are chosen to “drive” each of our learning units. They are proud to publish their writing and to see each piece on the Writing Wall.
AMBITIOUS: Children are encouraged to be ambitious with the language that they chose and the layout of the genre that they are writing. They make note of and use the exciting language they are exposed to in chosen texts and use it in their own writing.
CONFIDENT: Children are confident to read their writing aloud and to share it with other members of their class and the wider school community. They are given opportunities to write for purpose and their published writing is regularly read by other members of the community.
HAPPY & HEALTHY: Children have the writing skills and knowledge of language in order to be successful writers in every day life. They are proud of their achievements and thrive on the positive reinforcement they feel from having their writing read by a real audience.
