At Hayesdown First School design and technology should be fully inclusive to every child. Our aims are to: fulfil the requirements of the National Curriculum for design and technology, provide a broad and balanced curriculum, ensure the progressive development of knowledge and skills, to learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens through evaluation of past and present design and technology, develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world, to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world using the language of design and technology.
The aims of teaching design and technology in our school are:
Our Design and Technology curriculum links with our school’s REACH values in the following ways:
|Children develop a sense of responsibility for identifying the design needs of the project and how they will meet these requirements
|Children engage in practical activities and explore their ideas as individuals and teams where they can develop effective products
|Children learn about products and methods of construction that are beyond their everyday experience and are given the opportunity to use these in their own designs
|Children are confident to express opinions and to take risks in their designs by exploring ideas through experimentation and refinement
|HAPPY & HEALTHY:
|Children learn about how to keep themselves healthy through a balanced, nutritious diet.
Reading at the Heart of our Curriculum:
DT supports our school’s aim to place “Reading at the Heart of Hayesdown” by providing opportunities to read instructions when engaging in practical activities. They will have the opportunity to read feedback from others and have the time to evaluate their own work to make improvements for next time.
