Striving for excellence together

Election Day

Posted on: 8th July 2024

On Thursday 4th July, children at Hayesdown First school joined in with the rest of the nation and held their very own Election day.

Children voted for new members of the school Council and Eco-team, and just like in the general election, candidates had to make speeches saying why they believed they would make good candidates. The children showed their confidence as they explained to their classmates the skills they have to represent them – such as good communication, new ideas, good listening, responsible attitudes and organisation.

All three hundred pupils then marked their ballot paper and went to the polling station to cast their vote. Putting democracy into action, the votes were then counted and the new members of the School Council and Eco team were announced in assembly.

The children also took the opportunity to learn about Emmiline Pankhurst and the suffragette movement. The children were shocked that women had not been allowed to vote until one hundred years ago and

made banners and rosettes to share in an assembly.

“It’s not fair if girls can’t vote.” said a Year 2 pupil

“It’s important that we all get a say in who we want on our school council” said a Year 3 pupil.
