Hayesdown First School

Striving for excellence together

Our Curriculum

Welcome to our “Amazing Hayesdown” Curriculum – which provides children with memorable learning experiences that will last a lifetime and foster a love of learning. We take a project led approach, aiming to provide exciting “hooks”, purposeful outcomes, home challenges and celebrations which showcase learning within the school community.

At Hayesdown First School our broad, balanced and rich curriculum is designed to: recognise and build on children’s prior learning; develop connections so that children can apply their knowledge; provide first hand learning experiences which build cultural capital, allow the children to develop social skills and resilience to become confident, creative, critical thinkers. The four key drivers of vocabulary development, social skills, growth mindset and life experiences are the foundations of our curriculum offer. In addition we have two Golden Threads running through the curriculum design:

  • Locality – taking an active interest in and building knowledge of the local area that we live in; taking advantage of all it has to offer.
  • The Environment – considering our impact on the world around us, how we can be more environmentally friendly in all we do, as individuals, a school and as a society.

Learning is underpinned by the teaching of core knowledge, vocabulary and values with a vision to prepare children for life beyond Hayesdown. Clear progression models provide opportunities to build upon what has been taught before and gives pupils the required knowledge and skills for their next stage of learning. Alongside aquiring knowledge, children develop their understanding of how they learn through our Learning Behaviours: Resilience, Independence, Linking, Reflection and Creativity.  Reading sits at the heart of Hayesdown, with an ambition for all pupils to be confident, fluent readers who use their skills to access learning and enjoy reading for pleasure. Our Little Learners help children understand the subjects within the curriculum and inspire them to be authors, designers, scientists, athletes, historians, musicians – infact anything they want to be.

Our Hayesdown REACH Values (Responsible, Enthusiastic, Ambitious, Confident, Happy & Healthy) promote positive attitudes to learning and behaviour and underpin all we do. Our school recognises the importance of Pupil Voice through children’s roles as: Captains; members of Eco Team; School Council; Peer Supporters; Sports Leaders and Digital Leaders.

Every child is recognised as individual and unique. Everyone is valued and supported with a range of opportunities to match the needs of children. We have an inclusive school community, celebrating and welcoming differences and diversity. We are committed to the  wellbeing and nurture of all pupils and support them through programmes of Emotional Learning, mentoring, play-therapy and our nationally accredited Nurture provision (which has received The Marjorie Boxall Quality Mark Award (MBQMA) for excellence in Nurture). We pursue this ambition using both universal and whole school approaches as well as personalised, targeted approaches aimed at disadvantaged and vulnerable pupils.

Children leave Hayesdown with a pride in their achievements and the confidence to take the next step in their learning.  They have the “Will, Skill and Thrill” to make decisions, self-evaluate, make connections and become lifelong learners.
