Pupil Premium Grant

Pupil Premium Grant

The Pupil Premium Grant (PPG) is additional funding given to publicly funded schools in England to raise attainment and improve the progress of disadvantaged pupils.  By this means, the intention is to close the attainment gap between disadvantaged pupils and their peers.

Children eligible for PPG include:

  • Pupils who have been registered for Free School Meals (FSM) at any point in the last six years
  • Looked After Children
  • Children adopted from care under the Adoption and Children Act 2002 and children who have left care under a Special Guardianship or Residence Order
  • Children of armed services personnel

The DfE provides guidance on the allocation of Pupil Premium Grant funding each year, which is linked to the annual January school census data.

Each school is able to decide how it will spend its PPG.  Schools are responsible for publishing online each year, information in respect of their PPG spending.  This must include:

  • the school’s pupil premium allocation for the current academic year
  • details of how the school intends to spend its allocation
  • details of how the school spent its previous academic year’s allocation
  • the difference the allocation made to the attainment of disadvantaged pupils.

For 2021-2022 the government has also provided schools with the Recovery Premium; additional funding to support the educational recovery of children whose learning has been impacted by the COVID19 pandemic and school closures. Information on the Recovery Premium funding can be found here. Schools have been asked to report on how they plan to spend the Recovery Premium funding within the PPG report for 2021-2022, 2022-2023 and 2023-2024.
